The Garage in Norwich has announced more than £60,000 of investment from Arts Council England
to continue the development of its programme for young people.
The investment supports the venue’s ambition to be a regional centre for young people’s theatre.
This latest funding follows an initial grant award in 2011 to launch a professional performance
programme called ‘Curtain Up!’
“Our first year piloted professional theatre here at The Garage. We were delighted with the success
and brought several innovative, emerging theatre companies to Norwich,” says The Garage’s
Director, Darren Grice.
“The Garage’s core work is about supporting young people creatively. Our theatre programming
ethos is to deliver exciting work suitable for those audiences, but not exclusively. It’s frequently
grown-up theatre, but that which young people can relate to. This enables us to enhance our core
work, offering new opportunities to young people, but also broadening our audiences, showcasing
everything else The Garage has to offer.”
The live theatre programme adds to a nationally renowned programme of creative education and
training activity that takes place at The Norwich venue, used by 10,000 people of all ages every year.
“It is significant we’ve been able to secure a second year of funding,” says Mr Grice. “At a time
when arts funding is on the decline, the investment in expanding our programme is tremendous
endorsement of our work.”
The autumn season of Curtain Up features six plays from some of the country’s brightest young
theatre companies. The season begins on Thursday 11 October with Gomito Productions’ The
Alchemystorium – a supernatural tale of love in a coffee shop.
