The John Peel Centre is an arts centre in the middle of Stowmarket in Suffolk
It has been run by a small team of staff, a Board of directors and a huge team of volunteers since it opened ten years ago following a huge fund-raising effort. Recently, they have been offered the opportunity to extend into a former bank building, 11 Market Street, which faces onto the main high street. Taking on this building will mean that the John Peel Centre could do much more and develop a greater range of activities for Stowmarket, with a greater variety of spaces and an entrance right on the high street that but it is also a significant risk for Mid-Suffolk Council who own the building as well as for the team that runs the existing centre. This means that they need to have a development and business plan so they have engaged a team of consultants - Culture Shift and The Garage from Norwich and EDRM from Ipswich - to help them with a feasibility study and to test their vision and ideas before they can commit We will be running a series of interviews, public consultations and a survey to check out the best way to make the most of this opportunity and to give the council the confidence to support the plan to expand the John Peel Centre. Update: we are pleased to report that the work we did was successful and JPC were awarded a peppercorn lease on the Bank Building which will enable them to expand their work and add to the cultural offer of Stowmarket |
